Kep is a small coastal town in southern Cambodia built by the French as a seaside retreat, its hillside villas abandoned and left to the jungle through the Khmer Rouge years and now slowly being reclaimed as guesthouses and cafes. The crab market on the waterfront is the town's real center, stalls selling Kampot-pepper crab straight off the boats to plastic tables at the water's edge. Kep National Park loops through the forest above town on an easy day hike. Rabbit Island sits a short boat ride offshore, with hammocks and simple bungalows and little else.
